Quick answer
Brown stains around braces can sit on the small elastic that holds the wire, on the glue around a bracket, or on the tooth itself. Your orthodontist can replace a stained elastic at your next adjustment. If a brown patch stays on the tooth after normal brushing, or you can't tell what it's on, book a dental check even if it doesn't hurt.
Start with the small ring around the bracket
Look in a mirror after you've rinsed away any loose food. The bracket is the small block fixed to your tooth. If you have elastic ties, you'll see a tiny loop stretched around each block to hold the wire in place. See whether the color stops at the edge of that loop or extends onto the tooth.
Say you ate curry last night and several once-clear loops now have the same yellow-brown tint. If the exposed tooth beside each loop looks unchanged, the ties are a good first guess. Coffee and tea can tint them too. Once a tie picks up color, brushing may do little to restore its original shade.
Edilene Kawabata and colleagues tested four brands of ties in 20 adults wearing braces. Each person wore all four brands at the same time. After 30 days, the patients and their orthodontists saw staining in all four brands. The researchers measured changes in the ties, so their findings don't tell you whether the enamel underneath changed at all.
When a brown line hugs the edge of the bracket
The glue that holds a bracket to your tooth can also pick up color. Where that glue meets the enamel, a narrow brown line can be hard to place. If a fresh tie goes on and the same line remains, point it out before you leave the chair. Your orthodontist can check where the glue ends and the enamel begins.
Researchers at the University of Zagreb tested ceramic brackets and samples of bracket glue in several liquids. Coffee caused the greatest color change in their lab tests. They soaked the samples for up to 14 days, so the results can't tell you what one cup does to your braces.
If your brackets don't have elastic ties, skip the comparison with a fresh tie. Ask your orthodontist to look directly at the bracket edge. Don't try to peel the glue away.
When the brown patch is on the tooth
A brown patch between the bracket and your gum deserves a dental check. Even after a thorough brushing, a surface stain and a change in the enamel can look much the same.
Plaque is a soft film you can brush away. If it hardens into tartar, it can pick up brown stains from drinks such as coffee. A dentist or hygienist can remove the deposit during a cleaning. Don't try to scrape the area to see what comes off.
Decay can also leave a brown spot. Plaque collects around brackets, and acids from the bacteria in that plaque can draw minerals out of enamel. An early change may look chalky white. A darker spot doesn't tell you how deep it goes.
When you call your dentist, mention whether cold water or sweet foods make that tooth hurt. If it feels fine, keep the appointment anyway. The NHS notes that early decay can be painless.
You don't need to wait until your braces come off to get the tooth treated. If the enamel surface is still intact, a dentist may use fluoride to help reverse early decay. Once there's a hole, you'll usually need a filling.
Clean the strip your brush can miss
If you usually brush straight across the wire, look at the narrow strip of tooth between each bracket and your gum. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends brushing above and below the brackets as well as across them. Use a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day. After brushing, spit out the excess toothpaste without rinsing it away.
Clean between your teeth daily. A small interdental brush can help you reach under the wire and along the sides of each bracket. If the same corner keeps collecting food, take your brush to your next visit and ask the team to show you the angle.

FAQ
Can I get a curry stain off clear ties before an event?
Call your orthodontist and ask whether they can change the ties before the event. Brushing may shift some of the tint, but a replacement removes the stained elastic straight away. Leave the ties in place until your visit.
Does a brown spot mean I'll have a permanent mark after braces?
A mark on an elastic goes away when your orthodontist changes it. A mark in the enamel can remain visible after your braces come off, even if the decay has stopped. If your dentist finds enamel damage, ask whether it still needs treatment and what color change you can expect.
Will whitening strips help with a brown ring around one bracket?
Skip the strips while you're finding out what's causing the ring. They won't remove tartar or treat a cavity, and whitening with brackets in place can leave an uneven shade. If you still want whitening once your braces come off, ask your dentist after they've examined the spot.
